Coupling Rings are used to attach two lenses together via the filter threads on the front of each lens. Coupling rings are similar to stepping rings, only where a stepping ring has one male and one female thread, a coupling ring has two male threads.
Coupling rings are particularly popular with Macro photographers, allowing the stacking of lenses - an inexpensive way of achieving high magnifications.
